Lecture: “Modeling the interaction of two-dimensional materials with moving charged particles”
As part of the ICTM Seminar Series, a lecture by Prof. Dr Zoran Mišković, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, will be held on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, at 12:00 in the ICTM Meeting Room.
The lecture, entitled “Modeling the interaction of two-dimensional materials with moving charged particles”, will present several recent results in the mathematical modeling of two-dimensional (2D) materials in the context of electron microscopy and related techniques.
Using graphene and phosphorene as representative isotropic and anisotropic 2D materials, respectively, the lecture will address electron energy loss spectra (EELS) and related quantities, including the stopping force acting on a moving charged particle and the induced wake potential. Particular attention will be given to plasmon excitation by incident charged particles and plasmon–phonon hybridization in dielectric environments. Selected results for graphene will be compared with available experimental EELS data, while the consequences of the anisotropic in-plane response of phosphorene will also be discussed, including the application of the Energy Loss Method to the calculation of its electrical DC conductivity tensor. Finally, the effects of the out-of-plane response of 2D materials will be considered using generalized boundary conditions for Maxwell’s equations, treating these materials as polarizable sheets of zero thickness.
