BIOLAWEB - successfully completed summer sampling despite high temperatures (July – August 2023)

Despite very challenging weather conditions, the BIOLAWEB researchers successfully completed the summer sampling of lakes throughout Serbia.

The BIOLAWEB team investigated four different lakes and, on that occasion, samples of phytoplankton, diatoms, and macrophytes were collected. These samples are intended for both microscopic observations and genetic-molecular analyses. In addition to biological investigations, researchers will thoroughly conduct chemical analyses of the water. This comprehensive approach ensures a complete understanding of the ecosystems of these lakes.

During this summer sampling, colleague Susanne Schneider from the Norwegian institute NIVA made a significant contribution with her presence at Savsko Lake and Plava Banja near Kikinda. She snorkeled on these lakes and took samples of macrophytes, and with additional activities, she helped with the overall ecosystem assessment of these lakes.

As the summer fieldwork is over, the BIOLAWEB team, in addition to other activities on the project, is eagerly preparing and awaiting autumn sampling.

The success of our researchers – the award of Djoka Vlajković's Foundation of the University of Belgrade

The Foundation of Đoka Vlajković, the University of Belgrade, awarded prizes for the best scientific works of young scientists of the University of Belgrade, published from 01.01.2021-31.12.2022. We are proud of our colleague, Dr. Marija Ajduković, Senior Research Associate, who was given the award for her paper in the group of natural and mathematical sciences:

Nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based on smectite and biowaste-derived carbon, as peroxymonosulfate activators in degradation of tartrazine, Applied Clay Sciences, 2022, 230, 106718, authors Gordana Stevanović, Nataša Jović-Jovičić, Jugoslav Krstić, Aleksandra Milutinović-Nikolić, Predrag Banković, Aleksandar Popović, Marija Ajduković, DOI: 10.1016/j.porgcoat.2021.106474, institutional repository: CeR.

Congratulations to Dr. Ajduković and co-authors, as well as other winners! We wish them a lot of success in their further work!

Painted mural on the ICTM building in Njegoševa Street

The side of our Institute's building in Njegoševa Street has been given a new look. Prominent scientists are depicted on the painted mural: Prof. Dr. Milutin Stefanović (1924-2009), Prof. Dr. Paula Putanov (1925-2014), and Prof. Dr. Pavle Savić (1909-1994). With their work, they made an exceptional contribution to the development of chemistry and physical chemistry in Serbia, as well as to the founding of the Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy (ICTM). The ICTM logo is displayed on the wall, as well as the most significant dates in the history of our Institute - from the establishment of the State Chemical Laboratory in 1859 by decree of Prince Miloš, the construction of the building in Njegoševa in 1882, to the acquisition of the status of the National Institute in 2018. This news was also covered in numerous domestic media (in Serbian: Fonet, Euronews Srbija, N1, Danas, …)

The building in Njegoševa represents a Cultural monument and speaks of the tradition of chemical sciences in Serbia.
