1859 decree of Milos Obrenovic estalishing the State Chemical Laboratory

In 1882 a building was erected for the needs of the State Chemical Laboratory at the crossing between Kralja Milutina and Njegoševa streets. Its purpose was to be the place “to gather all chemists of Serbia”. In 1928 an additional storey was built. During almost 140 years of its existence it has seen a majority of the important moments in the development of chemistry in Serbia. This was the place where Serbian Chemical Society was established and where it held its meetings until the beginning of World War I. This is also the place where the Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy is located today.

Since 1859 the State Chemical Laboratory went through multiple transformations, gradually becoming a general laboratory for all branches of applied chemistry:

  • State Chemical Laboratory (1859-1926),
  • Department for chemistry of Central Sanitary Agency (1926-1941),
  • Research Institute of Central Directorate for Medical Production (1944-1948),
  • Chemical institute of Serbian Academy of Sciences (1948-1954)
  • Chemical Institute (1954-1961),
  • Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy (1961- )
